On Tuesday, Dec. 8, World Equestrian Center's Winter Wonderland is closed, as it is every Tuesday except Dec. 22. That night and again on Dec. 15, Santa and Mrs. Claus are in the gazebo on the downtown square, and it costs nothing.
That small detail explains the whole season. Ocala has two holiday calendars, and they mostly run on different days. The City of Ocala and its volunteer partners hold free events downtown on a handful of fixed dates. WEC sells tickets by day of the week, and its cheapest nights fall where the downtown calendar is busiest. If you plan by weekday, you can do both without paying the top WEC price or circling the square for parking.
Downtown turns its lights on first
The season starts downtown, six days before WEC opens. Light Up Ocala is Saturday, Nov. 21, from 3 to 8 p.m. This year is the event's 42nd. The City lists more than 100 vendors, an interactive kids' zone, and the Junior Sunshine holiday parade with Santa, all leading up to the lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. School bands, dance studios and Scout groups march in the Junior Sunshine Parade, which ends at the lighting.
WEC Winter Wonderland opens Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving, and runs through Dec. 23. For the five days in between, the square's lights are the only holiday display in town.
The City hasn't announced Light Up Ocala shuttle details for 2026 yet. Last year's shuttle lots may not be used this year.
WEC prices by weekday, and downtown fills the gaps
WEC's ticket prices set the pattern for the season. On Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, entry is $8 if you buy ahead and $11 at the door. On Fridays, Saturdays and four special dates, it's $14 ahead and $16 at the door. Children 4 and under get in free. Tickets are only good for the date you choose, all sales are final, and the posted prices include tax and fees.
Those weekend prices pay for more programming. WEC's live entertainment, line dancing lessons and Festive Fare on the Grand Plaza only run on Fridays, Saturdays and the special dates. On the cheaper nights you still get the lights, Santa and the Grinch.
Here's how the weekdays line up from Thanksgiving weekend to Christmas:
| Night | WEC Winter Wonderland | Downtown and the arts calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Closed, except Dec. 21 | No recurring event |
| Tuesday | Closed, except Dec. 22 | Santa on the Square, Dec. 8 and 15 |
| Wednesday | Open, $8 advance / $11 door, except $14 / $16 on Dec. 23 | No recurring event |
| Thursday | Open, $8 / $11 | Santa on the Square, Dec. 10 and 17 |
| Friday | Open, $14 / $16 | First Friday Art Walk Dec. 4, park movie Dec. 11 |
| Saturday | Open, $14 / $16 | Christmas Parade Dec. 12 |
| Sunday | Open, $8 / $11, except $14 / $16 on Dec. 20 | Matinees at the Reilly |
The cheapest WEC nights are Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Most of downtown's big free events fall on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when WEC is either closed or charging its highest price.
Two Santas, on different schedules
Both calendars have Santa photos, and they're set up differently. Downtown, Santa and Mrs. Claus sit in the square gazebo at 1 SE Broadway St. on Dec. 8, 10, 15 and 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. The program is free, and the City asks families to bring their own phone or camera.
At WEC, Santa is in Indoor Arena 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. on every open night. You can get a digital keepsake photo and write him a letter. The Grinch's lair in Indoor Arena 1 has Cindy Lou Who, Thing 1, Thing 2 and Max.
The two schedules only overlap on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17, both Thursdays. On the two Tuesdays, the gazebo is the only Santa in town. If you'd rather visit WEC on a quieter night, Wednesday or Sunday is the cheaper ticket, and WEC adds two new attractions this year that work any open night. One is a pair of virtual reality rides, Santa's Enchanted Express and a Magical Sleigh Ride, sold as an add-on to admission. WEC also lists Breakfast with Santa on Saturdays, a Kids' Character Brunch and Holiday Movie Nights at The Equestrian Manor, all sold separately.
Two Fridays where downtown events stack up
Downtown's Friday events cluster on two dates.
Friday, Dec. 4. The last First Friday Art Walk of the year brings more than 40 artists, live entertainment, family art activities and later shopping hours to downtown. The City says the walk is free and that free parking is available, including street spaces after 6 p.m. The same night at 7 p.m., the Ocala Symphony plays its free Symphony Under the Lights, according to the Reilly Arts Center's 2026–27 season brochure. The orchestra's Pops! Goes the Holidays follows on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and on Dec. 6 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 11. Ocala Recreation and Parks shows Rise of the Guardians for free at Tuscawilla Park, 800 NE Sanchez Ave., at 7:30 p.m. The City's holiday page lists this movie under Dec. 12 in one heading. The current movie lineup page lists Friday, Dec. 11. That same weekend, the Ocala Symphony and Dance Alive National Ballet perform The Nutcracker on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 12 at 8 p.m.
Ocala Civic Theatre's A Christmas Carol runs Dec. 9–20 and overlaps both of these weekends. Before that, The Thanksgiving Play runs Oct. 29 through Nov. 15, according to the Civic's Season 76 brochure.
Parade Saturday, and the new garage
The Ocala Christmas Parade is Saturday, Dec. 12, at 5:30 p.m. It's organized by Friends of the Christmas Parade, Inc., an all-volunteer group. This year's theme is "A Red, White, and Blue Christmas, in honor of America's 250th birthday." The parade website gives the route. It starts at SE 25th Avenue and Ft. King Street and heads north to East Silver Springs Boulevard. From there it turns west for 1.6 miles to NE 8th Avenue, then turns north and ends at NE 3rd Street, just before Tuscawilla Park. The organizers say it "starts promptly at 5:30." The site also shows a second entry for Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. Check with the organizers before planning around that date.
Downtown parking is easier this season than last. 352today reported that Parking Garage No. 2 opened Sept. 8, 2026, between West Broadway Street and West Fort King Street. It offers free parking for up to 800 vehicles within walking distance of the Historic Downtown Square. Construction started in spring 2025. You can enter from SW Second Avenue or SW Third Avenue. The City's downtown meters run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at $1.25 an hour south of SR 40 and $0.75 north of it. All of the downtown events above start in the evening or on a weekend, outside metered hours.
There's also a new place to eat this year. The Forge, at 343 NE 1st Ave., held its grand opening on Saturday, Oct. 10, with a ribbon cut by Mayor Ben Marciano, 352today reported. Its three restaurants are The Hammock, serving coastal Spanish food and tapas; Ignite, serving Asian fusion; and The Blind Eye, a Prohibition-themed spot with Southern-inspired food. Smaller stands include Just Desserts, Alloy Kitchen, Dear Jack Coffee Company, Parting Lines pizza and Leaf & Vine. The Forge serves Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. That works for a Pops! matinee or a $8 Sunday at WEC.
On the square itself, a December 2025 352today dining guide lists Brick City Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar at 10 S. Magnolia Ave., The Lodge at 36 S. Magnolia Ave., Sushi Bistro at 18 SE Broadway Ave., Harry's Seafood Bar & Grille at 24 SE 1st Ave., Cantina at 35 SE 1st Ave., and Katya Vineyards at 11 E. Silver Springs Blvd. That guide is almost a year old, so check hours before a parade night.
WEC's last four nights cost the most, and the Appleton runs past Christmas
WEC treats Dec. 20 through 23 as special event dates. All four nights are priced like a Saturday, including Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd, which are normally closed nights. If you want the full weekend program on a weeknight, those are the dates. If you want the lowest price, go Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday before Dec. 20. Emma's Patisserie and Miss Tilly's Lollipops sell holiday pies, Yule logs and sugar cookie decorating kits daily through Dec. 31, after the lights close.
Before Thanksgiving, the two calendars cross once. WEC's Food & Wine Festival runs Nov. 6–8, with cooking demonstrations, live music, and tastings from local restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries, according to Ocala/Marion County's visitor bureau. It opens on Friday, Nov. 6, the same night as November's First Friday Art Walk downtown.
The Appleton Museum's Dickens exhibition opens Nov. 7 and stays up until Jan. 10, 2027, according to the visitor bureau's holiday guide. The museum's free Holiday Community Day in December includes holiday crafts and seasonal displays, according to its events page. The Dickens exhibit is the one holiday event on either calendar that's still running in the new year, after WEC's lights close on Dec. 23.
If you're getting ready to list in early 2027, the team at Concierge Real Estate Co. can line up the prep work, including repairs, staging and photos, while you spend November and December downtown and at WEC. Get your instant home valuation now, and we'll have a plan ready when the season ends.
